The lake is so similar to what is it was like when he was a child that it’s like the road didn’t even think about it.He believes that if the road had touched it at all, he wouldn’t be able to preserve his childhood.The next morning he and his son went fishing and he exclaimed , “The small waves were the same chucking the rowboat under the chin as we fished at anchor, and the boat was the same boat, the same color green and the ribs broken in the same places, and under the floorboards the same fresh-water leavings and debris…….”(5). In both sources, the theme is shown through portraying the significant role of remembrance, and its importance toward life. He even goes on to say that it is a “constant and trustworthy body of water”(6). White both have a theme of memories, and how the past affects the future or present. He was certain there would be changes as he slowly descended into detailed reminiscences of the smells of his old bedroom and the “stillness of the cathedral”. The sound of the new motors was the only thing that would shake his vision that his child was he and he was his father. Both these essays give the reader insight of how the author uses the theme of time to show different aspects, In E.B.
