From I-70, take Vail Exit 176 and turn north onto North Frontage Road before driving west, then take a right (turning north) onto Red Sandstone Road. Will definitely be back for this one! We mistakenly got on road to east trailhead and the holes/puddles got a little too big & deep for us and our vehicle. You have two options: From the eastern trailhead (off of Forest Road #786), the trail stumbles upon the lake in about a half a mile. Awesome views. Not too much to look at on way to lake, lots of down trees because of beetles. Mountain bikers use this trail, too, so make sure Fido is under control and out of the way for cyclists. Trail is much smoother than many. Took the pups I am dog sitting & LOVED it!!! Lots of downed trees across the trail, but easy to get around. The views are incredible after about an hour or so of hiking. Ryan Dearth, 07/02/2020 Watch out fir ticks , we wanted to sit on the logs by the lake but had an interesting amount of ticks. By But, that's no fun — the trek from the western trailhead (off of Forest Road #700) winds through pine and aspen groves for 3.4 miles before it ends at the banks of Lost Lake (well, technically, it continues to the eastern trailhead, but after spotting the reflective waters, you'll probably agree that it's a great turnaround point). Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash. Keep score or just listen!

We did the trail in early October and it was pretty blah. Lost Lake near Vail is an excellent and accessible moderate hike to a gorgeous mountain lake. A subtle elevation gain also makes this another great hike for trail runners, and a nice option for out-of-towners looking to get in some mileage without the lung-and-leg-taxing vert.
