We hiked 16 miles total over 2 nights (2 miles in night 1, then 6 miles to the lake on day 2) at 5,200 ft of elevation. This 10.2-mile out-and-back is a San Juan classic that spends a dramatic mile above treeline. (see photo) It took us about 8 hrs round trip. The trail flattens after a series of short switchbacks lead to a lichen-covered rock garden. Buckskin Pass, the saddle looming above the head of the steep valley, is now in sight.

Just make sure you know your limits, as well as give yourself plenty of time to acclimate to the altitude ;).

The final section of the trail climbs 480-ft in just over 0.5 miles. Pyramid Peak (14,018-ft.) and a jagged ridgeline of 13,000-ft. peaks dominate the skyline to the east while the Sleeping Sexton and Maroon Bells rise above the ridge to the south.

I don't have injured knees; however, my knees were aching by the time we got to willow pass, so I would recommend trekking poles.

As you reach the top of the slide enjoy wonderful views of the Maroon Bells and the Sleeping Sexton, located on the ridge extending north from North Maroon Peak.
